What is a living wall

Some of the problems that we are facing nowadays are pollution and lack of space, especially lack of green areas. These problems affect seriously our quality of live.  These problems can be tackled thanks to a new gardening proposal as living wall which allows us to have cleaner air and green spaces in our cities.

Living walls known as Green wall or vertical garden are new concepts in gardening that aim to enhance walls, columns, etc. with living plants who can grow in different containers. These gardens can be built on any surface either indoor or outdoor.

Green Walls enhance our spaces and improve the quality of the air by capturing dust and particles in the air, furthermore they absorb CO2 and give back oxygen. They represent an unbeatable thermo acoustic isolation.

Benefits of living walls

They decorate, they refresh the environment more over they regulate the climate effect on walls which allows us save energy to heat up or cold down a building. That is why Green walls have more advantages than just a beauty effect.

Are good for humans, animals and the environment. Researches have proven that urban areas with vegetation reduce the temperature of those areas in summer so green walls help to fight the effect of urban heat island. They give biodiversity and allow plants to absorb ultra-thin particles that penetrate deeply into our respiratory tract.

 Aesthetic benefits

A Green Wall ads charm in any of our rooms or indoor space. It does not matter if we would like to install it

in the kitchen, in a living room or in a hall, in any case this type of solution will manage to introduce a bit of nature into our house, furthermore green colour ads relax, freshness and happiness into our home. We have to consider that living walls match any decoration style we might have as modern, classic, etc. There is always a vertical garden for each style.

Studies confirm that hospital areas with vegetation helps to reduce the stays of the patients. Living walls add oxygen and filter organic volatile pollutants (VOC) as benzene and formaldehyde, besides carbon monoxide, improving this way the quality of indoor air. In addition 1m2 of green wall catches 130gr of powder per year and generates the oxygen needed by a person in a year -Darlington, 2001-

Vertical gardens are ideal against acoustic pollution, decreasing noise and vibration received by buildings that have this gardens. Plant insulator reduces up to 10 decibel the acoustic pollution. Profesor Akira Hoyano -Tokyo Institute of Technology

 Environmental benefits

The main benefits go from the reduction of the sick building syndrome up to the positive influence in the fight against the climate change. Living walls fix many air pollutants and increase CO2 fixing surface, reduce the temperature, muffle the effect of torrential rainfall from buidings, retain powder and promote biodiversity. Offer protection for different birds, beneficial species and pollinators.

They reduce the temperature in cities by plant evapotranspiration decreasing this way the effect of heat island in cities. -Profesor Hiroyuki Yamada-

 Economic benefits

They save water: The water consumptions are balanced and optimized due to the possibility of installing a closed circuit of irrigation. They save energy; they are natural thermal insulation.

They regulate the temperature of the spaces that contain a living wall, reducing the energy consumption to warm up in winter and cold down in summer. Unlike brick and concrete walls, living walls don’t store up the sun’s energy in the daytime and release it as night-time in the same way.

Studies have showed that businesses, hotels, restaurants, malls, etc. with vegetation and green spaces tend to have more clients. Companies that add plants in their spaces have added value against their competitors and increase the value of their products and services. Being green walls an option to attract possible customers.

 Houses, buildings, spaces upgrading, etc.

Studies done in Canada showed that having living walls, plants or green spaces in the properties increases their commercial value in 20%.

Vertical gardens are hung on a wall vertically which allows other uses of the horizontal space.

Creation of intimate environments by means of separation of areas with vegetation. Likewise, the not wished sights are blocked.

Huge adaptability: they can be installed indoor, outdoor, with any form, on any surface curve or plane, etc.

 Biodiversity

Living walls can have a huge variety of plants that increase the flow of birds and pollinators in an area, helping to generate bio sustainable ecosystems in our cities.

Vertical gardens in our cities are perfect tools for the sensitization and raise environmental awareness of the population.
